Here's why many musicians favour the Zoom H4N over other portable digital recorders.

The Zoom H4N is a vast improvement on it's previous inferior models. H4N was brought out in response to the criticism they got for the H2 Model. The earlier models had a weak, plastic build with serious noise issues.

However, the Zoom H4N is sturdy and robust with a rubber coating, giving it a much better sound quality. The screen is clearer and larger and the navigation buttons are bigger which makes the Zoom H4N easier to use. You get a great recording quality with the internal aluminium microphones as you can rotate the mics between 90 to 120 degrees giving you good coverage even a good 15 feet away from the music source.

The Pros of Zoom H4n

The Zoom H4N is just half the price of some other recorders but you still get all the features which makes it ideal.

Here is a look at some of the most impressive aspects of the H4n.

1) 4 recording tracks which is a rarity in portable devices. 2 of these are from the internal stereo condenser mics and the other 2 are from the external mic inputs. This means you can record a live band plus the input of a specific instrument like the guitar or keyboards giving more room for creative mixing of the music files.

2) The Multitasking feature is another great recording option. This gives you 4 distinct and separate tracks which means you can vary the volume and effects of each track. This is a valuable feature if you are a musician as you can layer the compositions.

3) H4N can also be used as an audio interface using a USB cable into the computer.

4) The H4n works as a microphone and a headphone jack when connected to the computer. It can be used to make Skype calls or to record music or live audio feed with your laptop.

5) SD card slot which is cheaper and easier to use than Sony memory sticks. Zoom H4n offers support for phantom power microphones plus you also get access to a low cut filter where you can choose from several frequencies.

The Zoom H4N sound quality is very good compared to some competitor's recording devices like Sony or Edirol. You can get more professional sound quality from other recording devices. But, they cost a lot more, sometimes upto $200 more, and you only get a marginally better sound. The H4n is priced at $300 which is fantastic considering all the features that are packed into the piece.

With its price and features, the H4n is suitable for a wide group of users including audio recordists who are on the look out for a cheap device that can power condenser mics which require phantom power.

The Cons Of The Zoom H4n

The H4N could have been even easier to use by having a separate track marker button. It can be strange and confusing as you have to press the record button twice in order to mark the tracks.

Be careful when handling the features next to the SD slot as you could accidentally eject the card and lose your data. The slot could have been placed further away from the other features.

You can't delete a character in the file name plus the H4N manual is a poor translation which could have been better revised.
