Old Radio Shows For The 21st Century
There was many classic radio shows back in the 1930's, 40's and 50's, many call "The Golden Age of Radio". There were decent radio classics on every night that you could huddle round the fire to and be thrilled by, Suspense, Escape, Inner Sanctum and The Whilster are just a few of these. This became known as the Golden Age of Radio.
By time the 1960's came around these old time radio shows died out. It didn't disappear all of a sudden. It took about 10 years die out from when it started to decline and had pretty much disappeared by time the last episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar was broadcast in 1962.
There was a brief comeback in the 70s and 80s when Himan Brown's CBS Radio Mystery Theatre ran from 1972-1982. However since then there has been little in the way of mainstream radio thrillers.
There is however one show that did stand out above the others called "Tales from the Morgue".
Chet Chetter's Tales from the Morgue is a series of short stories as told by an elderly morgue attendant, licensed embalmer and resident story teller named Chet Chetter to a passing stranger of the night played by you, the listener.
All these stories are all fairly interesting or superstitious. Many of them are SCI-FI or supernatural. You could consider some of them to be a bit outrageous but that is how they were meant to be.
Roughly half of the shows feature a nice, likeable, rural southern manure hauler by the name of Elmer Korn who always finds himself involved in some inane predicament.
Off-beat the show may be but it is humeral and this is what listeners are looking for.
This series was created and produced by M&J Audio Theater. Mark Sawyer & J Reel.
Mark and Jay are childhood friends who met in the sixth-grade in 1977. X Minus One, Lum and Abner and Gunsmoke are examples of old time radio shows that they both enjoyed and started their interest in radio drama. One can hear these influences in every story from the subject matter and the character voices, to the plots.Thins about the show such as the opening to the show, the host's humorous manner and the happy endings relate very closely to "The Inner Sanctum" and Himan Brown.
In these stories Mark and Jay collaborated on over 20 characters. It is clear that Jay plays more important characters as he was the voice of Chet Chetter, Elmer Korn, The Sheriff Roland and Gale Headrush Taylor. Mark only seemed to play the voice of Cecil Farris and various incidental characters.
In 1989 the first Chet Chetter story was produced my Mark and Jay, it was called "The Highway of Death". This was the start of a series of 95 episode recorded between 1980 to 1995. They call it "The Conofrof Saga".
National Public Radio responded with an order for three more stories when they first submitted "The Highway of Death" which they were surprised by. The four episodes were accepted and broadcast on NPR Playhouse in 1990. These shows went down so well that NPR requested 9 more episodes be written for the following year! The year after that in 1992 these were broadcast as a complete 13 show series.
Since this a few production houses have found audiences for their own shows online.
It is strange how things can go full circle. From the Golden Age of Radio to these stories being available online today.
In the Golden Age of Radio there was a demand for these hight quality old radio shows and it shows that this is still the case today. The medium might have changed, but maybe the entertainment people enjoy hasn't changed quite as much as we might sometimes think.
Websites such as www.rusc.com make these old time radio shows available for you to download or stream so they can be enjoyed into the 21st century and beyond!
