Saint [VHS] $1.00 Lightly enjoyable but a disappointment in the context of author Leslie Charteris’s popular character, the Saint–who has been played by several actors, most notably George Sanders–this 1997 film is more in keeping with the requirements of high-octane contemporary action than it is the requirements of a particular legacy. Val Kilmer plays Simon Templar, the mercenary spy, who is hired to steal a f… |

Self Defense - Stunning Protection
Have you ever watched TV and, seeing a report about a crime, made a statement to the effect of "If that had been me I would have…". Would you have been able to offer protection to your loved one or defend yourself? Would you be able to disable an attacker long enough to get away? Have you had any training in self defense? Consider this:
- Everyday in the United States citizens and/or their property are threatened in a variety of ways. In 2005 there were an estimated 11,556,854 crimes committed in this country. That is 31,662.6 per day, 1,319.2 per hour or 21.9 crimes committed every minute of every day. The good news is that crime has actually decreased by a little over 2% from the previous year.
As if the numbers above are not bad enough, imagine this; many of these crimes were committed by people the victims knew. In 7 out of 10 rapes or sexual assaults, the victims knew their attacker. Twenty-six percent of men and 52% of women said they knew their robber. In the case of murder 43% knew their assailant and another 43% had an "Unknown" relationship with their murderer.
In my opinion, many of the crimes being committed everyday could have been prevented if the victims had simply taken steps to protect themselves, their family and their homes. Usually, when someone makes a statement like that the first thing that comes to mind is a gun. Although that is one alternative, there are other, non-lethal, methods for providing the protection you need. In a lot of cases guns are too final and not always effective in the wrong hands. What I mean is that most people will not always hit what they are aiming at which could result in the accidental death of an innocent bystander or the assailant. When my wife sees the cops chasing a bad guy on TV she'll yell "Shoot him in the leg". Well anyone who is really familiar with firearms will tell you it's not that easy.
So what can we do? Well that's easy depending on where you live. There are stun guns, pepper spray, mace, Tasers, Kubatons and many other non-lethal weapons available to you.
Stun guns can be very effective against an attacker and are used by many law enforcement agencies as a defensive alternative. Contrary to popular belief, the current from the stun gun will not pass to your body if the attacker is holding on to you. Stun guns are available in a variety of styles and voltages. You can purchase stun guns that look like flashlights and pagers and pack up to 975,000 volts.
Tasers are another alternative which are also used by police. In law enforcement studies, some tasers, like the Advanced M-18, had a higher instant incapacitation rate than a 9mm hand gun and can shoot up to 15 feet.
Pepper Spray and Mace can keep an attacker from getting too close by providing an effective stream from 5-18 feet, depending on the style you purchase. Kubatons are easily carried in a pocket or purse but require close contact for effective use.
So don't go another minute thinking that "It will never happen to me." What if "it" doesn't happen to you, but does happen to someone you love? Can you accept the fact that you could have done something but didn't?Tom Stabler was born and raised in NE Philadelphia, PA.
