Korean $165 Spoken by nearly 70 million people not only within the Korean Peninsula but also in five continents, Korean is one of a dozen major languages of the world. Yet outside Korea it is not as much studied as it should be, nor has it acquired commensurate international recognition. With its difficult sound system, rich word formation patterns, and complex sentence structures, Korean is one of the most challenging to learn as a foreign language, yet there is little that is written in English about Korean. This book eminently fills this gap. The author presents Korean in a lucid and readable manner covering topics from scripts to sounds, from words to sentences, and from discourse to text analysis. It is therefore both comprehensive and concise. It avoids unnecessary details but includes all essential subjects, and describes them in a well-organized theory-free prose. This book should be a handy reference for both teachers and students of Korean, especially those abroad. The author is one of the most eligible to write a monograph of this kind. He received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is Professor Emeritus of Seoul National University. He was the first president of the Linguistic Society of Korean. ( Chin-W. Kim, University of Illinois ) |

A Chinese Translation Throws Light on the Causes for the Popularity of Translation
One of the reasons for the rapid development of translation as a discipline is probably political and social change. The end of the Cold War is one of the events that had a great impact on the world’s development. China’s political influence, as it is claimed in the Chinese Translation of a paper entitled “China –the New Political Power,” is another cause which determined the imposing of translation as a university course. Among other reasons we can point out large multinationals and the self-consciousness of the various minority groups. Having been influenced by these critical societal features for alteration, we will easily discover why the academia of translation gained such a rapid popularity. Another thing is that new disciplines such as gender studies had to compete with acknowledged disciplines.
Having a look at disciplines closely related to translation studies, Chicago German Translation specialists can note theatre studies, which is dominated by theory and is a mix of structuralism and critique. Post-modern studies, on the other hand depend on typically American features, one of which is to use previously written texts. As we can notice in the foreword to the Korean Translation of a paper by Richard Dunhill entitled How Translation Married Other Branches of Knowledge, translation studies is not entirely dependent on theory as before the introduction of this field lecturers belonged to other education sections. Thus it was obvious that they had found the required theoretical tools to make translation a preferred subject.
Thus Philadelphia Translation Services specialists can conclude that translation studies encompasses a mix of theories. In spite the fact that this has not brought in new changes in translation theory, the implementation of theoretical stuff from other scientific fields to that of translation has advanced the prestige of translation studies as academic field. In the Portuguese Translation of a study bearing the name “New Trends in Translation” we learn that translation studies has become more successful than other fields because in going for their set of regulations they have voted on a more constrained combination of founding works.
