Yet outside Korea it is not as much studied as it should be, nor has it acquired commensurate international recognition. With its difficult sound system, rich word formation patterns, and complex sentence structures, Korean is one of the most challenging to learn as a foreign language, yet there is little that is written in English about Korean. This book eminently fills this gap. The author presents Korean in a lucid and readable manner covering topics from scripts to sounds, from words to sentences, and from discourse to text analysis. It is therefore both comprehensive and concise. It avoids unnecessary details but includes all essential subjects, and describes them in a well-organized theory-free prose. This book should be a handy reference for both teachers and students of Korean, especially those abroad. The author is one of the most eligible to write a monograph of this kind. He received a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is Professor Emeritus of Seoul National University. The Connection between German Translator Studies and Japanese Internationalization

At the turn of the 20th century, Japanese academics agree on a scheme to utilize Western cultural pattern through some key works translations in an attempt to modify Japanese paradigms by leaving some of the national cultural practices, explicitly the ancient ones. A flood of translations of modernist literature and Western literary theories influenced significantly the cultural boom of the 1970s. Translation from German, for instance, into Japanese, has played a critical part in Japan’s globalization. On the other hand, as it is clear, globalization in culture does not automatically mean a one-sided process. Logically, this has led to the German Translation of some significant Japanese writers.

As it turn out, this does not result in theoretical agreement, but it will certainly make internationalization a less pertinent issue. For this reason two scholars, one educated in Korea and the other in France, and both of them familiar with Korean and French cultural studies, have attempted to deal with the contrast between the global and local aiming to reach an agreement on an explanation of Korean and French to English Translation studies in a global context. The Korean theoretical dialogue in the pre-war years is marked by apparent weakening, so the critical vocabulary applied is basic and does not contain theoretical intricacy.

Any attempt to involve the West as a basis of motivation is equivalent to internationalization, which is a dangerous tendency. Following several years of transformations, a number of Vietnamese theorists turn to Western criticism in order to update their theoretical database. Their aim is to become the literary avant-garde of the new age, by staging discussions on cultural theory with many of their Spanish counterparts with the objective to revive Vietnamese critical atmosphere. As a result, some Vietnamese research people have been singled out for a Spanish Translation, which will introduce the Vietnamese university professors to European educational institutions. Finally, many of the findings refer not only to critical self-importance but also to an native Vietnamese critical thought.
