The Translator’s Dialogue $158 The Translator’s Dialogue: Giovanni Pontiero is a tribute to an outstanding translator of literary works from Portuguese, Luso-Brasilian, Italian and Spanish into English. The translator introduced authors such as Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Manuel Bandeira, Clarice Lispector and José Saramago to the English reading world. Pontiero’s essays shed light on the process of literary translation and its impact on cultural perception. This process is exemplified by Pontiero the translator and analyst, some of the authors he collaborated with, publishers’ editors and literary critics and, finally, by an unpublished translation of a short story by José Saramago, Coisas . |

Translator as Writer $160 Over the last two decades, interest in translation around the world has increased beyond any predictions. International bestseller lists now contain large numbers of translated works, and writers from Latin America, Africa, India and China have joined the lists of eminent, bestselling European writers and those from the global English-speaking world. Despite this, translators tend to be invisible, as are the processes they follow and the strategies they employ when translating. The Translator as Writer bridges the divide between those who study translation and those who produce translations, through essays written by well-known translators talking about their own work as distinctive creative literary practice. The book emphasises this creativity, arguing that translators are effectively writers, or rewriters who produce works that can be read and enjoyed by an entirely new audience. The aim of the book is to give a proper prominence to the role of translators and in so doing to move attention back to the act of translating, away from more abstract speculation about what translation might involve. |

Jewelry Boxes Large Sized for Chunky Ethnic Jewelry: Focus on Marquetry with English Brown Oak Wood
Jewelry boxes large enough to safely organize and store jewelry are not hard to find. But considering the huge size of the box, it would be good to buy one that has some exotic art work done on it to draw attention away from its sheer bulk.
Safe and organized storage of jewelry is quite challenging for women. Most women keep their jewelry in its original box, which means that soon enough a woman will have a zillion boxes and pouches holding all her trinkets. And she would be constantly hunting for the right pair of earrings or necklaces to go with her outfit.
Any woman who loves collecting jewelry would welcome a beautifully handcrafted large jewelry box. It not only serves as a safe receptacle for the jewelry, it also acts as a showpiece and enhances the decor of the room. However a jewelry box that is carved out exotic and rare wood would be very costly.
You can instead opt for a beautifully handmade and yet inexpensive box made out of durable and sturdy locally available wood like white mahogany, which is adorned with some art work like marquetry. Marquetry uses several different matched pieces of veneer and burls of rare and exotic imported wood like the absolutely classy English Brown Oak.
The English Brown Oak belonging to the Fagaceae family (Quercus robur, Quercus petraea) is an intriguing example of exotic wood. It is not a separate tree but rather the wood of the English Oak that has been infected by a fungus. Interestingly, the beef steak fungus does not cause harm to the tree and just changes the color of the heartwood to a rich honeybrown that is not possible to reproduce with stains. Only when the tree is cut, milled, and dried, does the fungus die.
It has several names like the White Oak, Brown Oak, Yugoslavian Oak, German Spessart Oak, Pollardok, French Oak, Polard Oak, and the English Oak. The density of this wood is approximately 42 to 45 lbs per cubic foot. And the oak from Germany, has about 30 to 40 growth rings to an inch as opposed to the 8 growth rings of the English Brown Oaks from other countries like Yugoslavia, Great Britain, Poland, France, and Canada.
It has a very high level of resistance to rot caused by damp environs and the high level of tannic acid in its wood cells can be highly corrosive. The colour of the wood varies from place to place from a light biscuit colored tan to a deep rich brown. It has very beautiful silvery grains that make this wood very attractive for making jewelry boxes or in marquetry. Its age and place of origin can determine the final price of the wood but it is still a very expensive wood.
‘Marquetarians’, the experts in marquetry, love working with the English Brown Oak as it enhances their art and gives it a very sophisticated look. It can transform a dull wooden box into a classy piece of art when it is used in marquetry done on the lides of jewelry boxes.
