The Brother HL-4040CN printer with 4040CN toner, is flexible enough for installation at home or in a small workplace. It's a fast performer, able to churn out both color and monochrome prints. Because it employs laser technology, it's possible to enjoy documents with professional quality while keeping the prints per page cost to a minimum.

Inside it is a 300MHz NEC VR5500 processor. This allows this workhorse to dish out up to 21 color and monochrome pages every minute with laser toner. It only takes 16 to 17 seconds for the first page to be ejected. However, these speeds are still affected by a few factors. They include the computer's configuration and the amount of text or graphics the document contains. From sleep mode, warm up time takes 33 seconds, while it takes 37 seconds from power on. With such, you can get to the task at hand right away to meet your deadlines.

Because it has a resolution of up to 2400 x 600 dots per inch, graphics end up clear and texts are sharp and readable. This resolution is enough for a home or small office requiring professional-looking documents. You can come up with reports, brochures, presentations and all sorts of printouts with impressive quality.

With the 250-sheet standard media tray and 50-sheet multipurpose tray, deadlines can be met easily. There are a variety of media types compatible including bond paper, plain paper, transparencies, labels and envelopes. Supported media sizes range anywhere from executive, letter, legal, A5, A6, B5 to B6. The multipurpose tray, other than these, can also work with custom ones from as large as 8.5" x 14.0" to as small as 2.75" x 4.57".

There's a memory of 64MB already installed. But a 144-pin S0-DIMM expansion slot is available that allows you to increase the memory size up to 512MB (sold separately). There are a total of 66 scalable fonts, 12 bitmap fonts and 13 bar codes included with the PCL 6 printer language emulation used.

Black toner, on the other hand, is capable of producing up to 2500 pages (at 5 percent coverage). The manufacturer suggests that genuine toners be used for best results, available from many online and land-based sellers.
