Don Not Let The Bed Bugs Bite

Bed bugs are flat, reddish-brown and wingless nocturnal pests ; about a 1 / 4 of an inch long, practically the size of an apple seed that are adapted to feed on the blood of their hapless victims during the night. Most people who are bitten don't even feel the bite until waking up the next day itching.

Bed bug bites look very different from one individual to another but typically look like mosquito bites or acne. Unlike other insect bites or rashes, they typically show up in groups of two or three, or a line, or even a circle. Even medical experts are not able to easily differentiate a bed bug bite from another insect bite just by looking at it. Bed bug bites are most commonly seen on the face, neck, hands and arms and have a tendency to swell, become red and itchy.

One way to know if you have been bitten by bed bugs is to try to look for small brown spots on your bed linens and mattress, or around the seams of the mattress. These may resemble mold spots. These, and also the distinctive linear or grouped bite patterns, are some of the simplest methods to be reasonably certain that what you are dealing with is bed bugs.

Management of the itchiness or rashes is easily accomplished with over-the-counter medications. Topical antihistamines such as calamine lotion or benadryl cream are highly effective, as is most any insect bite relief product.

For home made remedies, a mixture of baking soda and water can help, as can the application of honey to the affected area. Basic remedies such as polymyxin creams (Neosporin, Polysporin) can help with the itching as well as aiding the bites to heal and prevention of any scarring. An oral antihistamine can significantly help reduce symptoms as well. Keep in mind, it is crucial not to scratch the bites, no matter how much you would like to - as scratching can cause infection and scarring!

Bed bugs themselves can be easily killed by sealing the mattress and pillows with hypoallergenic, zipped bed bug mattress covers to prevent them from feeding and biting you or your family members. This may take over 1 year to totally eliminate the bugs hidden in your mattress since bed bugs can live for many months without feeding on a host.
