Social Work CEUs- Where Can I Find the Criteria for Approved CE Providers According to My State Board? (Second Question)
In a recent article I addressed, "What are the Social Worker CE requirements in my state?". Question #2 will be answered in this article, which is, "How does my state decide which CE providers can offer approved social work continuing education?". It is necessary to gather this information prior to looking for a CE provider.
So, first thing is finding out what your state board requires of you, following this, it is necessary to verify what constitutes an approved provider. There is variability in what constitutes an approved CE provider among state boards. Becoming aware of your state board's requirements will be helpful in selecting a provider. Before getting into where to find the answer to the question above, let's evaluate the three main differences in pre-approval for CE providers.
The first option is to file for approval directly with the state board. If a provider has been approved by a specific state board they will have been assigned a unique provider number. As an Example, those that are licensed Social Workers in California, the CE provider chosen for your continuing education must have been issued a PCE# from the CA BBS. For those whose state board has the same requirement as California, make sure the CE provider you use have been issued a provider number by your state board.
A second option are those providers who have been approved by a national organization that the state board recognizes. For instances, Connecticut social workers can earn CE from a provider who has been approved by the NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors). Not all states accept the same national approvals, it may also depend on the profession.
Another category are licensees that use providers approved by a different state but which govern their profession. For instance, a Social Worker in Alabama can use a provider who has been approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (CA BBS), since the CA BBS governs Social Workers. So, now you know the variations of acceptance, where do you go to find out what your state board allows?
Start at the home page of the website for your state board. From there you will be looking for a link for the state board's rules and regulations (or statutes, rules, etc.). After getting to the rules document you will need to find the section on continuing education within that document. This is the section that will explain what your state board deems as acceptable sources. For Oregon Social Workers, the section you are looking for is "Continuing Education Reporting Requirements". This is where it will be explained what criteria your state board uses in determining which providers are approved.
You now have the information needed to begin your search of a CE provider. Your search will not be as frustrating have done your pre-work. If the approval information you are looking for is not readily available on the CE provider's website, ask them for it. If they don't have them, keep looking. The next question to be answered will be, "How many hours of my CE can be earned online?", stay tuned.
