Creating Your Own Circuits? Learn What Board To Use
When starting an electronics project, hobbyists have to decide what board type they will be using. A simple answer: it all depends. It depends on your budget, your project needs, and your abilities. Choosing a board really depends on the unique conditions for the project. Anything from custom PCBs to prototype PCBs, we will be looking at each of them and their purposes. See how you can get custom printed circuit boards.
Breadboard Prototypes
Named after earlier radio protoypers who would nail copper nails into actual breadboards, breadboard is a plastic prototyping tool that doesn’t require soldering. Alternatively, wires will be used. Circuits and prototype designs can be tested and retested with relatively little effort to modify them. The ideal time to use breadboards is the prototype phase when you are working out the kinks with board functionality and placement. Low cost and flexibility are their key benefits. Let's not forget that these boards can be used over and over becuase no solder is involved.
Using Perfboard for Semi-Permanent Circuits
Once a prototype has been designed with breadboard, the next step could be to increase its permanence by finalizing it with perfboard. These perfboards are already drilled out and have copper pads placed in a grid format. Components are added by inserting them into the pre-drilled holes and soldering them to the backside of the board. With comparable performance to a custom printed circuit board, perfboards allow designers to refine their prototypes or create single PCB set-ups.
Etch Out Your Own Custom PCB
Factoring in size and reliability, PCBs are probably the optimal option. Conversely using a PCB also requires the most planning and effort. They are not ideal for prototypes. Once the circuits have been designed and set in place in a PCB, they are permanent. PCBs are for final circuit designs that are ready to be placed into a working device. You can easily get the tools and material necessary for etching your own PCBs. But if you are creating large numbers of the same board or don’t wish to make your own, we recommend using a third-party PCB manufacturer. Working with them requires a larger budget, but with the price you get guaranteed quality. The only thing a PCB manufacturer will need are lead times and design files and they will be able to make as many boards as you need. See what a PCB manufacturer can do for you.

1.25 Sorbothane Rubber Bumper Non-Skid Feet with Adhesive 50 Durometer - 8-Pack $25.95 Sorbothane rubber bumpers are pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed hemispheres that can be used as feet, stops, spacers and protectors in many applications. Each rubber pad features aggressive, high-tack pressure-sensitive 3M 200MP adhesive with a release liner, making application fast and easy. The unique Sorbothane urethane is a durable, resilient, polymer that provides outstanding vibration isolation and non-skid properties. Installation is quick and easy with no need for drilling, riveting or press fitting push-in feet. Sorbothane bumpers help absorb impact and noise and have excellent resistance to aging; they will not harden or crack over time. The smooth, clean, black urethane hemispheres serve as a modern and discreet rubber foot. Use them on trophies and desk-top items to act as a cushion and protect surfaces from scratching. Use them under audio and electronic equipment to prevent skipping and interference. Primary applications include feet for small appliances, DJ sound mixing boards, phones, keyboards, speakers, desk accessories, printers, laptops, computers, monitors, multimedia projectors, DVD players and audio receivers. Hemispheres can be used as stops for cabinetry and woodworking. The rubber pads can be used as spacers/dampers for automotive computers and circuit board rigidity and vibration isolation. They also work great for separating stacked glass and metal sheets. Sorbothane hemispheres can be used as non-slip spacers on medical tabletops, electronic assemblies and lids. They are also useful as spacers to help protect delicate printed circuit boards from vibration and heat build-up. Installation - Simply remove the protective backing liner, position the Sorbothane rubber hemisphere and press it into place. The unique urethane material won't crack, dry, scratch or mar surfaces. It will last for years to protect and isolate your valued possessions. Ideal weight load is between 5 and 10 lbs per foot. |
